CHAPTER SEVEN
DANIEL scraped off a little paint with his palette knife, added an important touch of deepest red to the shock of hair which dominated a great proportion of the portrait, then stood back to assess his work so far; he had set out to capture Cathyâs innocence and vulnerability on canvas and that was what he felt he had achieved.
He continued to gaze critically at the painting; it was a strong piece of work, probably his finest to date. Daniel released a breath which signified a little of the emotion within him. He felt different, alive with the possibilities of what lay ahead. There was no doubt Cathy brought out the best in him. He just hoped this wonderful, almost crazy phenomenon was a two-way thing.
Daniel eased a hand across his aching neck, glanced at his wristwatch and saw with surprise that it was almost three in the morning. His work on the Langforde Charity Foundation had taken longer than heâd thought, and then, as was often the way, he had become so engrossed with his painting that he had lost track of time.
He heard a small snuffling sound, then what sounded like a sort of whimper. Daniel stood still for a moment and listened. There it was again, only louder this time. He placed his palette knife onto the small table behind him and wiped his hands clean on an oily cloth. He should investigate.
Robbie was still sleeping soundly. Daniel pulled the bedroom door closed and walked along the landing to his own bedroom.
Cathy looked hot and unhappy in sleep. Daniel leant an arm against the frame of the doorway, watching with concern as she tossed and turned in the large double bed, her arms flailing wildly. Light from the landing illuminated the tormented expression on her face. She cried out again, some mumbled, indecipherable words which tore at his heart, and he moved quickly into the room, closing the door behind him so that the noise wouldnât waken Robbie.
âCathyâ¦shhâ¦sweetheart, itâs just a dreamâ¦â He sat on the edge of the bed and placed gentle hands on her shoulders. âCathyâ¦â he repeated gently. âYouâre dreaming. Wake upâ¦â She cried out again, seemingly lost in some personal nightmare, and Daniel leant low, lifting her body against his own to hold her close. âCathyâ¦â He whispered her name gently, stroking back the damp strands of hair from her face. âSweetheartâ¦itâs all rightâ¦itâs all rightâ¦â
She found herself awake and in his arms. She knew where she was; she knew that Daniel was holding her. She listened to the sound of his deep voice and closed her eyes, sinking softly against the strength of his body. It felt wonderful to be held like this. After the nightmareâ¦Cathy squeezed her eyes tight shut. She didnât want to think about that now. She whimpered a little, despite the knowledge that Robbie was alive and safe, and sleeping soundly just along the hallway.
âSweet darlingâ¦.â
Danielâs voice was the most heartwarming thing she had ever heard. It melted her in the darkness.
